Thirty-seven of those years have been as the Councilor from the Sacramento Section and 3 years as a member of the ACS Board of Directors.

The ACS Council is the legislative body for the Society. Dr. Hayes has been an active Council member serving on many committees including 10 years on the Committee on Meetings and Expositions (3 years as chair), and has been elected by Council as a member of each the three Elective Committees of the Council, Council Policy Committee (the Executive Committee of the Council), Committee on Committees and Committee on Nominations and Elections.

Because of this service she has been able to provide the Sacramento Section strong support through her connections with the National Officers and Staff as well as the varied committees and taskforces of the Society. She has also served as chair of the Division of History of Chemistry and active involvement in a total of 3 ACS divisions.
