SCC Chem Club Outreach and Field Trip to LBNL

The Chem Club completed two different outreach activities on three separate days. Twice students visited seventh grade classes at Emerson Junior High to demonstrate and discuss chemical reactions including burning, dissolving, and precipitation reactions. The students loved the demo of a candle burning in pure oxygen versus just plain old air. Club members Nicole Ackerman, Alexis Kennedy, Zach Kehrt, Jose Lopez, and Jasmine Hakim enjoyed interacting with the students and helping them learn about chemistry. Including both days, the Chem Club worked with over 200 students.

At the Chem Club’s Earth Day booth, club members demonstrated the basic principles of soil chemistry by having attendees test the pH of different soils. After they tested the soils, we explained the effects of soil pH on the growth of different crops.
