MBARI seeks a skilled professional to develop engaging content that spotlights MBARI’s marine research and technology mission and to manage relations with and requests from external outreach partners, including media organizations.
Description:
This position presents a unique opportunity to showcase the work of world-class scientists, engineers, and marine operations professionals; tell inspiring stories about ocean science, technology, and conservation at MBARI and the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA); and coordinate media requests for use of our video and images and access to MBARI facilities.
The ideal candidate is a thoughtful science communicator and storyteller who cares deeply about MBARI’s mission; is detail-oriented and can carefully execute and manage license agreements; has a desire to build and cultivate relationships with MBARI’s external collaborators in academia, government, industry, and media; and has a passion for finding ways to engage new and diverse audiences by telling inclusive ocean and climate science, marine technology, and conservation stories.
The successful candidate will contribute at both a strategic and tactical level to MBARI’s outreach efforts and digital asset management, working as part of the Editorial Team on content creation and with Video Lab staff on video and image requests. Content creation will focus primarily on written content–writing press releases, news articles, web content, social media posts, stories for institutional reports and projects between MBARI and MBA, including communications for the upcoming exhibit on the deep sea launching in 2022. The successful candidate will also help to produce livestreams, infographics, animations, and videos.
The Science Communication and Media Relations Specialist will also have the opportunity to leverage MBARI’s one-of-a-kind video library–with more than 26,000 hours of underwater footage captured by our remotely operated vehicles–to create compelling, mission-driven content. Additionally, the incumbent may be asked to go to sea, as needed, aboard MBARI’s two research vessels, the Western Flyer and the Rachel Carson.
The mission of MBARI is to advance marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. The mission of MBA is to inspire ocean conservation.

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in training and experience is required. Experience working in a newsroom, a university press office, or communication/education organization is desirable. Video production experience is a plus. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required as is the proven ability to manage multiple projects with tight and shifting deadlines.
